Lessons learnt through the martyrdom of Rami

By: Pastor D. Hanna Massad,
Pastor of Gaza Baptist Church

“I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.” John 11:25
“They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God. They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me. I have told you this, so that when the time comes you will remember that I warned you. I did not tell you this at first because I was with you.” John 16:2-4
“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness… Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”
2 Corinthians 12:9-10
“Why are you sad, O my soul? Why have you become troubled within me? Hope in God, for I will praise Him again, my help and my God.” Psalm 43:5

I was telling myself how God honored us with the martyrdom of Rami, and since God is raising martyrs among us, and since there are brothers among us who are ready to sacrifice their lives for their faith, then it is a shame that we stab each other’s back, and that we are divided. We know that our love has to flow from a pure heart. We should not allow for ridicules that happen between brothers and sisters and drift us away from each other at times like these.

After Rami’s murder, our lives positively changed, our love, and many other sides changed. Our relationship and fellowship with God has changed for the better, even the way we read our Bibles, as well as the way we are praying now.

Christ is the giver of life, he is the Lord of life… in Him is life and without Him there is no meaning to life. Many people live for many years; they come and go but are never remembered. But there were others that lived very short lives and had a tremendous impact through their lives and martyrdom - the same as Rami. He was almost thirty, but through his sacrifice he left the body of Christ with legacy and inspiration. Rami, with his honesty, has not only left his finger prints on our lives, but has shaped it in our hearts and minds as a true model for the future.

How do we become true Disciples of Christ? The word Christian is mentioned three times in the whole Bible, but the word disciple was mentioned 232 times. It is God calling us to be disciples. Rami understood this; he was aware that this affiliation might cost him his life, and he did not hesitate to give his life for his faith in Christ.

During the most difficult moments, Rami followed the words of Christ: “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.”

God help us all to be loyal to our faith all through our lives, and to be ready to do like Rami: sacrifice our life for our faith and for our Christ who gave his life voluntarily for each and every one of us.
